Situation

A question and answer about who may enter God's tent, followed by a portrait of the person who qualifies: truthful, no slander, keeps promises even at personal cost, and lends without charging interest.

Key Background

This is an entrance liturgy, a call and response most likely spoken between arriving worshippers and priests at the sanctuary gate, a pattern also known from temple entrances elsewhere in the ancient Near East. Israelite law forbade charging interest to a fellow Israelite, because such loans were emergency relief for a neighbour in crisis rather than commercial investment. Refusing to take a bribe against the innocent points to the village court at the city gate, where local elders judged cases and a small payment could easily decide an outcome.
