Situation

A survey of humanity in which God looks down from heaven and finds no one doing good, and the powerful devour God's people as casually as eating bread. It ends by longing for rescue to come out of Zion.

Key Background

The fool of the opening line is not someone lacking intelligence but someone morally reckless, and saying there is no God in ancient Israel meant assuming God would never intervene rather than denying his existence outright. This psalm appears again, with small changes and a different divine name, as Psalm 53, evidence that songs circulated in more than one collection before the book reached its final form. The scene of God looking down to inspect humanity echoes the flood and Babel stories in Genesis, where God comes down to see what people have done before acting.
