Situation

A statement of loyalty in which the singer refuses the drink offerings poured to other gods and claims God himself as his portion. It closes with confidence that God will not abandon him to the grave.

Key Background

When Israel settled Canaan every tribe received a measured share of land except the priestly tribe of Levi, who were told that God himself was their portion, and this psalm borrows that vocabulary of lot, boundary lines, and inheritance to describe a relationship rather than real estate. Pouring out a liquid offering of wine or blood was a normal act of worship across the region, so naming those offerings identifies exactly which practice the singer is refusing. The heading calls it a miktam, one of six psalms with that label, a term whose meaning was already unclear to ancient translators.
