Situation

A very short psalm in which God invites the king to sit at his right hand until his enemies are subdued, then swears that he is a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. The rest describes a victorious march on the day of battle.

Key Background

Sitting at a ruler's right hand was the physical position of the second in command in an ancient court, so the image is a throne room, not a metaphor for closeness. Melchizedek was the king of Salem, an early name for Jerusalem, who appears in Genesis 14 as both king and priest, a combination Israel's later law kept apart by restricting priesthood to Aaron's family. Invoking him lets the psalm claim that the Jerusalem king holds an older and separate priestly office, and this became the single most quoted psalm in the New Testament.
