A compact hymn praising God's works, his provision of food, his gift of land, and the reliability of everything he sets in place. It ends by calling reverence for God the beginning of wisdom.

Key Background

This is an acrostic poem, meaning each line begins with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet in order, a structure used to aid memory and to suggest completeness from A to Z. It is deliberately paired with the psalm that follows, which uses the same alphabet pattern and much of the same vocabulary but applies to a person what this one says about God. The reference to giving food to those who revere him and remembering his covenant would call to mind both the manna in the wilderness and the Passover meal, the community's two founding memories of being fed by God.
