Situation

A traveller looks up at the surrounding hills and asks where his help will come from, then answers that it comes from the God who made heaven and earth. The rest of the psalm promises that God guards the traveller day and night, coming and going.

Key Background

Travel in this period was genuinely dangerous, with bandits working the passes and no policing between towns, so a promise of protection on the journey was practical rather than sentimental. The hills also held shrines to local gods, so looking up at them raised a real question about which power the traveller would trust. Sunstroke by day was a common killer on these roads, and many ancient peoples blamed the moon for night sickness and madness, which is why the psalm names both sun and moon.
