Situation

The pilgrim has finished the journey and stands inside the gates of Jerusalem, glad that people invited him to go up to the house of the Lord. He admires the compact walled city and calls on everyone to pray for its peace.

Key Background

Jerusalem served as both the religious centre, holding the temple, and the political centre, holding the thrones of David's line, which is why the psalm mentions worship and courts of justice in the same breath. City gates were the ordinary place for legal cases to be heard and business to be settled, so the gates stood for public life. The Hebrew wordplay is deliberate, since the name Jerusalem sounds like the Hebrew word for peace, shalom, and the psalm plays on that sound repeatedly.
