Situation

A brief, vivid poem on the exodus from Egypt and the crossing into the promised land. The sea runs away, the Jordan turns back, and the mountains skip like rams at God's approach.

Key Background

The poem never names God until the fourth of its four stanzas, holding the subject back so the fleeing sea and shaking hills are described before the reader is told who caused it. Judah is called God's sanctuary and Israel his dominion, terms that treat the people themselves rather than a building as the place God lives. Water pouring from rock in the closing lines refers to the wilderness episodes at Meribah, and would have carried extra weight for pilgrims who had walked dry hill country to reach Jerusalem for the festival.
