Situation

A hymn urging God's servants to praise his name from sunrise to sunset. It marvels that a God enthroned above the heavens stoops to lift the poor from the dust and to give a childless woman a household of children.

Key Background

This psalm opens the group known as the Egyptian Hallel, Psalms 113 to 118, sung at Passover and the other pilgrimage festivals, with the first two coming before the meal and the rest after it. The picture of the poor man raised from the ash heap and the barren woman given children echoes Hannah's song in 1 Samuel 2, and both reflect a society where a woman without sons had no economic security in old age. Praising from the rising of the sun to its setting was a standard ancient phrase for the full span of a working day and the full reach of the known world.
