Situation
Jeremiah tells Zedekiah he will be captured and taken to Babylon but will die peacefully rather than by the sword. The chapter then reports that the people made a covenant in the temple to free their Hebrew slaves, and then took them back once the siege lifted, which is treated as the clearest possible proof of bad faith.
Key Background
Israelite law required a Hebrew slave, normally someone who had sold himself to cover a debt, to be released after six years, and the wholesale emergency release during the siege put every able body on the wall while also looking like a last-minute attempt to buy divine favour. Lachish and Azekah were the major fortresses guarding the approach to Jerusalem from the coastal plain, and a set of letters written on pottery fragments found at Lachish mentions watching for Azekah's signal fires, matching this moment almost exactly. The covenant ceremony described here involved cutting an animal in half and walking between the pieces, a binding oath meaning may this be done to me if I break my word, which is why the punishment announced fits the ritual so precisely.
This is the message that came to from Yahweh while king of Babylon and his entire army — along with all the kingdoms and peoples under his control — were attacking Jerusalem and all its surrounding towns:
"Go and speak to king of Judah. Tell him, 'This is what Yahweh says: Look — I am handing this city over to the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down.
You yourself will not escape his grasp — you will definitely be captured and handed over to him. You will see the king of Babylon face to face, and he will speak to you directly. Then you will be taken to Babylon.'
"But listen to Yahweh's promise, Zedekiah king of Judah: This is what Yahweh says about you — you will not die by the sword.
You will die peacefully. And just as people to honor your ancestors — the kings who came before you — they will burn for you too, and they will mourn for you, saying, 'Oh, This is my declaration," says Yahweh.
