Key Background

A new song in Israel meant a song written for a fresh act of rescue, the way a nation might write an anthem after a war ends. The trumpets and ram's horn named here were the instruments used to announce a king's coronation, so the psalm is staging God's arrival as a crowned ruler taking his throne. Judging, in Hebrew usage, meant setting things right and defending the wronged rather than handing down punishment, which is why the created world is pictured as glad about it.
