Israelite men were expected to travel to Jerusalem three times a year for Passover, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Booths, so this kind of longing was a normal part of religious life rather than an unusual devotion. The sons of Korah were a family of temple singers and gatekeepers, which explains the line about preferring a doorkeeper's post in God's house to comfort elsewhere. The Valley of Baca was a dry, tear-named place on the pilgrim route, and the picture of it filling with springs draws on the seasonal early rains that turned parched wadis green.
