Situation

The heading sets the psalm in the cave where David sheltered from Saul. He takes refuge in the shadow of God's wings while lions and men with spear like teeth surround him, then turns to confident praise and calls on his own soul to wake up and sing at dawn.

Key Background

The limestone hills of Judah are honeycombed with caves large enough to hold hundreds of people, and En Gedi in particular sits above one of the few reliable freshwater springs in the desert, which made it a natural hideout. The image of sheltering under wings draws both on a bird protecting its young and on the carved winged figures spreading over the ark in the sanctuary, so it carries the sense of taking asylum at God's own throne. Waking the dawn with music assumes the ancient practice of morning worship, when a night of danger was thought to end and God's help was expected to appear.
