Situation

The heading links the psalm to the time the people of Ziph went to Saul and told him where David was hiding. David asks God to save him by his name, names strangers who have risen against him, and promises a freewill offering once he is delivered.

Key Background

The Ziphites were fellow members of David's own tribe of Judah, so their tip off to Saul was betrayal by kinsmen rather than by outsiders, which sharpens the word the psalm uses for strangers. In that culture a person's name stood for their character and reputation, so asking to be saved by God's name meant appealing to who God had shown himself to be. A freewill offering was a voluntary sacrifice given out of gratitude rather than obligation, and vowing one in advance was a normal way of pledging public thanks for a rescue not yet received.
