A short burst of a psalm ordering everyone to clap and shout because God has taken his throne. God goes up with a trumpet blast and is proclaimed king over the whole earth, not just over Israel.

Key Background

The going up described here almost certainly matches a real procession carrying the ark, the gold covered chest that represented God's throne, up the hill into the sanctuary while the ram's horn sounded. Clapping in this setting was not applause but the acclamation given to a king at a coronation, the same gesture used when Joash was crowned in Jerusalem. Calling the nobles of foreign nations the people of the God of Abraham reaches back to the original promise that all families of the earth would be blessed through Abraham, which is why this psalm reads as unusually international for its time.
