Situation

A summons to praise that works downward, first the angels, sun, moon and stars, then sea creatures, weather, mountains, trees, wild and domestic animals, and finally every human rank from kings to young children.

Key Background

The order of the list follows the sequence of the creation account in Genesis, so the poem is effectively walking back through the making of the world and telling each part to answer. The phrase about the waters above the heavens reflects the ancient picture of the sky as a solid dome holding back an ocean overhead, which is where rain was thought to come from. Naming sun, moon, stars and sea monsters as creatures under orders was pointed in a world where Israel's neighbors worshiped exactly those things as gods.
