Situation

The first of five psalms that open and close with a call to praise, it warns against putting hope in princes, whose plans die with them, and lists what God does instead for prisoners, the blind, the bowed down, foreigners, orphans and widows.

Key Background

Psalms 146 through 150 form a deliberate closing set for the whole book, each one framed by the same shout of praise, and Jewish daily morning prayer still recites all five together. The advice not to trust princes had teeth in a province where the community's fortunes depended on which Persian governor or local aristocrat held favor at the time. Foreigners, orphans and widows appear together repeatedly in Israel's law as the three groups with no landholding male protector, which in that economy meant no legal standing and no reliable income.
