The return from Babylon was partial and the reality on the ground was hard, with a wrecked city, poor harvests and hostile neighbours, which explains why a psalm celebrating rescue also begs for more of it. In the Negev, riverbeds stay bone dry most of the year and then run with water after the rains, a familiar picture of sudden reversal. The image of weeping while sowing reflects the real fear of a farmer using up scarce grain as seed, gambling next year's food on a harvest that might not come.
