To end the argument over who may serve as priest, Moses collects one wooden staff from each tribal leader and lays them overnight before the ark. Aaron's staff alone sprouts, blossoms, and produces ripe almonds, and it is kept beside the ark as a lasting warning against further challenges.
Key Background
A staff was a leader's badge of office in the ancient Near East, often carved with the owner's name, so twelve staffs laid side by side was a clean test with no room for human tampering. Almond trees bloom before any other tree in the region, and the Hebrew word for almond sounds like the word for watching or being alert, a wordplay a Hebrew reader would catch immediately. Dead wood bearing fruit in a single night inverted the ordinary order of nature, which made it a verdict no rival could argue with.
Moses told the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff — one per leader, one per ancestral house, twelve staffs total. Aaron's staff was among them.
