Audience

The Israelites of the exodus generation, witnessing the founding of their priesthood

Situation

Moses carries out the ordination of Aaron and his sons, washing them, dressing them in the priestly garments, anointing the tabernacle and its furnishings, and offering the ordination sacrifices. The new priests remain at the tent entrance for seven days.

Key Background

This chapter is narrative rather than legal instruction, and it carries out step by step the commands given earlier in Exodus, which is why the wording repeatedly notes that Moses did as the Lord commanded. Anointing with specially compounded oil was how kings and sacred objects were set apart across the ancient Near East, marking a change of status that could not be reversed. Applying blood to the right ear, thumb and big toe symbolically claimed the whole person, hearing, action and movement, for sanctuary service, and the same three points appear later in the ritual for cleansing a healed skin disease.
