In the year that the Assyrian military commander came to Ashdod — sent by Sargon, king of Assyria — and attacked it and captured it,

at that time Yahweh spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz, saying, "Go and remove the rough cloth from your body and take off your sandals." So he did it — walking around stripped and barefoot.

Then Yahweh said, "Just as my servant Isaiah has walked around stripped and barefoot for three years as a sign and an omen against Egypt and Cush,

that's how the king of Assyria will drag away Egyptian prisoners and Cushite captives — young and old — stripped and barefoot, with their backsides exposed, to Egypt's utter humiliation.

Then they will be shattered and ashamed because of Cush, their source of hope, and because of Egypt, their source of pride.

And the people living along this coast will say on that day, "Look at what happened to the ones we ran to for help, the ones we relied on to rescue us from the king of Assyria! If they couldn't survive, what chance do we have?"
