Houses in Babylonia and Judah were built of sun dried mudbrick, soft enough to break through with hand tools, so digging out through a wall rather than using the door is exactly what someone escaping a blockaded city would do. The covered face points to the fate of King Zedekiah, who fled Jerusalem by night and was captured and blinded, meaning he reached Babylon without ever seeing it. Street theater of this kind was a recognized prophetic method, meant to make a message stick with an audience that had stopped listening to speeches.
