NGET BIBLE

1 Chronicles 23 in plain modern English. New Ground English Translation.

Time Period

David's final year, around 970 BC; the arrangements described were still the framework for temple staffing when the Chronicler wrote around 450 to 400 BC

Location

Jerusalem, at an assembly of Israel's leaders, priests, and Levites

Audience

Post-exilic worshippers whose community life ran on the temple rota, and whose clergy needed to prove their right to serve

Situation

David, now old, makes Solomon king and takes a census of the Levites, organizing thirty-eight thousand of them into work groups: temple supervisors, officials and judges, gatekeepers, and musicians. Their duties are listed clan by clan.

Key Background

Levites were the tribe set apart for sanctuary service but not for the priesthood itself, which belonged to Aaron's descendants, so this chapter sorts out who did what in a large religious workforce. Their original job of carrying the portable tabernacle through the wilderness ended once the ark had a permanent home, and the text says so directly, which is why their roles are redefined toward music, gatekeeping, baking, and administration. Genealogies functioned as job credentials in this culture, since a man's right to serve and to draw support from the offerings depended on proving his line, and after the exile families who could not document their descent were barred from priestly duty.

1

When David was old and had a he made his son Solomon king over Israel.

2

He gathered together all the leaders of Israel, along with the priests and the

3

The Levites thirty years old and above were counted, and the total number of men came to thirty-eight thousand.

4

David said, "Of these, twenty-four thousand are to oversee the work of Yahweh's house, six thousand are to be officials and judges,

5

four thousand are to be gatekeepers, and four thousand are to Yahweh with the instruments I've provided for that purpose."

6

David divided them into according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

7

From the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.

8

The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the chief, then Zetham and Joel — three in all.

9

The sons of Shimei: Shelomith, Haziel, and Haran — three in all. These were the heads of the families of Ladan.

10

And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah. These were the sons of Shimei — four in all.

11

Jahath was the chief and Zizah the second. But Jeush and Beriah didn't have many sons, so they were counted as a single

12

The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel — four in all.

13

The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was out, he and descendants forever, to be for to burn incense before Yahweh, to serve him, and to the always.

14

As for Moses, the of his sons were counted among the tribe of Levi.

15

The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.

16

The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the chief.

17

The sons of Eliezer: Rehabiah the chief. Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very numerous.

18

The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the chief.

19

The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

20

The sons of Uzziel: Micah the chief and Isshiah the second.

21

The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.

22

Eleazar died without having any sons — only daughters. Their relatives, the sons of Kish, married them.

23

The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth — three in all.

24

These were the descendants of Levi by their families — the heads of families as they were registered, counted by name individually, twenty years old and above — who did the work of serving in Yahweh's house.

25

For David had said, "Yahweh, the God of Israel, has given his people and he has to in Jerusalem forever.

26

So the Levites no longer need to carry the or any of the equipment used for its service."

27

According to David's final instructions, the Levites were counted from twenty years old and above.

28

Their job was to help Aaron's descendants serve at Yahweh's house: taking care of the courtyards and the side rooms, keeping that to clean, and doing whatever work was needed for the service of God's house.

29

They were also responsible for the of out the fine flour for grain offerings, the thin unleavened wafers, the baked goods, the mixed offerings, and all measurements of quantity and size.

30

They were also to stand every morning to and praise Yahweh, and to do the same every evening,

31

and whenever burnt offerings were presented to Yahweh on Sabbaths, and always before Yahweh in the proper number as prescribed.

32

So they carried out their responsibilities for the for the for and for their relatives, Aaron's descendants, in the service of Yahweh's house.
